BCC Ladies Hold Their Christmas Dinner

Tuesday, December 3, 2013 saw some 42 ladies from the golf and curling sections of the Brockville Country Club hold their annual Christmas Dinner in BCC's main dining room. Chef Jason, Emily and staff presented a very tasty turkey dinner with all the trimmings.
In support of the needy, the ladies brought bags full of food products for donation to the Brockville Food Bank. As we were in the meeting room next door, we know the Ladies had a good time, given the sounds projecting from the dinning room area. Merry Christmas BCC Ladies and to all members of the BCC.

Leadership Seminar Held for BCC Management

A Brockville Country Club Leadership Seminar for BCC Management was held over two (2) full days in the BCC golf lounge November 28 & 29, 2013. The seminar was facilitated by Ray Bushfield  & Laidy Carrol of Laidy and Ray Consulting Inc. Ray is our BCC President and such seminars is his business. The BCC is very appreciative of Ray presenting his leadership seminar for our own BCC management staff. Entitled "Intrapreneurial Leadership", the program was broken down into 5 components: Business Analysis; Strategy Analysis; Culture Analysis; Team Analysis and Leadership Analysis.
They provided the definition of "Intrapreneurial" as "the act of behaving like an entrepreneur while working within an organization".
Also attending the seminar were guests from the Brockville YMCA, the Toronto YMCA and the Ottawa YMCA. In addition the President of Control System USA of Hartford Connecticut and his wife attended. These guests, travelling on their own time, were invaluable in providing real-life experiences. The BCC thanks each of them for participating and working with our BCC management.

Running from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM each day, little interludes were devised to keep everyone on their toes. One such interlude, facilitated by "Mike" from the Toronto YMCA, saw Ray and Rob compete in an egg contest which saw a bit of egg on each of their faces. Good sports guys!
It was a very good two day seminar and we are sure all BCC's staff attending leaned a great deal and will be able to apply many of the lessons in their own operations.
Thanks again to Laidy and Ray for facilitating such a worthwhile seminar for our BCC management staff.

Our BCC Members Ringing the Bells for 15+ Years

Brockville Country Club members have been performing as "Bellringers" for the Salvation Army Christmas-time Kettle Program for the last 15+ years. The location over these years for the BCC kettle has been the uptown LCBO. And when you consider that this one kettle "manned" by our BCC member-volunteers brings in over 25% of the total Christmas Kettle contributions; you can understand the good-cheer being brought by our members.
The BCC Bellringer program has been coordinated over the last many years by Ross Henniger, with help from John Thompson and Maureen Darby. Ross indicates the "long-timers" who got the BCC program started and spent many hours out in the winter weather (yup, they are now inside the foyer) are John Thompson, Jack Butt, Doug Peacock, Henry Horbay). Ross stated that the BCC LCBO kettle over the past 4 years has brought in $98,000.00.
BCC Bellringing members for the 2013 Christmas season are: Dixie & Annie; Bob Anderson; Pam A & Margaret; Jim Bamford; Mary B & Anne M; Tim Blake; D. Bryer; Maureen Bryer; C. Brady; J. Butt; B & L Campbell; B. Chick; Maureen D & Vivian W; Dave Dargie; R. Davison; Peter Dawson; John Fullarton; Mo Gariepy; C. That is 74 Brockville Country Club members helping out from Nov 15th until Dec 24th to enable some Christmas Cheer to be brought to Brockville and area. CONGRATULATIONS Ross Henniger and team for your dedication to the Salvation Army's Kettle Program. And from all members of the BCC, a very Merry Christmas.

100th Anniversary Legacy Project Underway

Next year is the Brockville Country Club's 100th Anniversary. In recognition of our 100th, a Legacy Project has been approved and is under-way. That project will see the Driving Range and Practice Area upgraded into a 1st class facility for our members, guests and the community at large.

Construction is under-way. Weather is a deterrent, so only a portion of the project will be done this fall and the remainder will be completed in the spring. Can you imagine! The BCC will be 100 years old in 1914 providing continuous service to its members and guests. The Legacy Project will further enhance our facilities in keeping with the Club's proud heritage.

BCC Pro Honoured With Award Nominations

Our Brockville Country Club CPGA Professional, Derek MacDonald, was recently honoured by receiving two award nominations in recognition of his work as a teaching pro. The first came from The PGA of Canada - Ottawa Zone where Derek was nominated as Head Professional of the Year. Quite an honour for our BCC Pro. Two other pros from the Ottawa area were also nominated and in the end one of them was selected, but to just be recognized and nominated was quite an honour. Congratulations Derek.
The second honour came from Flagstick Magazine where Derek placed 2nd in the "Teacher of the Year" category. This recognition is especially significant because it comes from the large base of readers of Flagstick Magazine. Congratulations Derek for receiving this well deserved recognition.

Spencer Evans Gives a Great Performance at Brockville Country Club Dinner/Show/Dance

A Dinner/Show/Dance was held at the BCC Saturday evening, October 5, 2013, in the Brockville Country Club's main dinning room to the music of Spencer W. Evans and his son Oscar of Kingston. Spencer played soft background music during dinner then put on a great 2-hour show that had many up and dancing. It was not a large crowd, but a good crowd. Those that missed the event missed a fine performance.
Spencer is an accomplished Keyboardist, Clarinetist, Accordian Player, Singer, Band Leader Recording Artist, Composer, Arranger and Entertainer. His son Oscar had an accident last year and is now mostly blind. Very tragic but his blindness has not slowed Oscar down in accompanying his father on the drums. Spencer has toured across Canada, the U.S. and Europe. He has performed at the Royal Alert Hall and played the Jay Leno show featuring his Clarinet. He has recorded with many artist such as Bruce Cockburn and Tragically Hip.
As expected, our BCC staff served up a very good meal with choice of Wiener Schnitzel or Chicken Kiev. It was a fun and very entertaining evening. The next Dinner/Show/Dance is scheduled for Saturday November 16, 2013 in our main dinning room with 'The Memory Makers" (A.J. Benoit, Trisha Herbison, Mary Ross-Comstock & Billy Bosworth) singing all the great songs from the "Rat Pack Era". Don't miss this one as it will be an exceptional evening!

BCC's Teri deLuis Competes in the Irish & British Senior Women's Amateur Championships

Brockville Country Club's Teri deLuis joined nineteen other senior ladies from across Ontario to compete in the Irish Senior Women's Open Stroke Play Championship held at Castlerock Golf Club in Northern Ireland. The event took place September 11-13, 2013 with a 103 player field.
Then it was off to the Senior Ladies British Open Amateur Championship played September 17-19 at the storied Royal Portrush Golf Club, also in Northern Ireland.
When Teri was asked what she thought of the experience, she replied, "Northern Ireland is a beautiful county and has great people. The weather on the other hand was a very different experience. Both tournaments were plagued with gale force winds and torrential rain with the British shortened to 36 holes. Links golf is a different game, great fun .. you have to be creative and stay out of the fescue and pot bunkers. You learn to take your lumps and just get the ball back in play".
Teri ended up 27th overall in both events in the field of some 100 competitors. On the final day of the British, Teri was low Canadian and 5th overall. Great playing Teri.

Teri further explained; "This was my first trip to Northern Ireland. It was a no brainer for me to go. I love the game and the competition. I guess you could say golf is my passion."
It sounds like a great trip. Congratulations Teri in representing yourself, Ontario and Canada so well at both the Irish and British Senior Ladies Amateur Championships.
Teri, seen second from right with other members of the Ontario contingent.

A four lady Ryder Cup format was used with the team of Vivian Wright, Maureen Darby, Diane Visser and Carmen Santarossa winning the top team prizes. The remaining prizes of wine and flowers were given out by drawing names.
The ladies finished in good time and had a social time in the golf lounge before enjoying a delicious dinner of salad; choice of chicken, steak or fish and a strawberry cheesecake dessert. Congratulations to Sandi Stewart who organized the Ladies Closing and did a suburb job. Still lots of golf left, though Ladies, so keep those clubs handy!!

Wildlife and Golfers Quite Congenial at the BCC

During the BCC Men's Closing Golf Event, our family of deer were seen grazing just below the green on #6. They seemed quite unperturbed as we walked by.
Also seen was one of our resident Blue Herons at the pond on #10 stalking dinner. And the other day a gaggle of turkeys with 14 little ones, getting bigger every day, were spotted on #16. It is great to see the significant number of wildlife supported by the BCC's golf course.

BCC Men's Closing Tournament Held Saturday September 28th - Beautiful Weather; Great Conditions

The Brockville Country Club Men's Closing Golf Tournament was held Saturday, September 28, 2013 on a simply gorgeous day with 80 members registered. Two-man teams were established and the event played with a Ryder Cup flavour. The first 6 holes played from the whites as a Scramble; the next 6 from the Reds as Best Ball and the last six as Alternate Shot from the Yellow Tees.
Many thanks to Kent Swirsky (pictured) and Jonathan O'Reilly for organizing a great day, including the weather. After golf everyone was treated to a tasty chicken and ribs dinner in the golf lounge.
Overall winners (gross) were Dustin Payne and Dale Robertson (67) and net winners were Don Houle and Ray Debuc (embarrassing low). Shown in the picture l to r are BCC Pro Derek MacDonald; Don Houle, organizers Jon O'Reilly and Kent Swirsky, Ray Dubuc, Justin Payne and Dale Roberston.
A Great Day and a Fun Time Had by All .. but where has the season gone!

BCC Improvements Comtinue With Path Upgrade by #12 Green

The fall time sees Lawrence and his crew very busy with getting the course ready for the winter and implementing a number of improvements. One improvement you will see while golfing these beautiful fall days is an upgrade to the cart path by #12 green. Many thanks to Bob Castle for again donating the concrete for this improvement. His generosity and support of the Club is much appreciated.
The new concrete path will run from the #12 fairway, past the #12 green and connect into the concrete path that runs from #3 green area and past the #4 tee box areas. This will be a great improvement as the old path in this area was certainly in disrepair. And stay tuned, as I believe there will also be another section of new path completed this fall as well.

Twenty four (24) men's teams coming from Ontario, Quebec, Alberta, Manitoba, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, Scotland, Sweden and Minnesota, USA competed. Also twelve (12) ladies teams competed coming from Ontario, Quebec, Scotland, Switzerland and Wisconsin, USA. After some great play and some unbelievable shots, Sunday crowned the Brad Jacobs Rink of Sault St. Marie, Ontario, Men's "Shorty" Champions and the Mirjam Ott Rink of Davos, Switzerland, Ladies "Shorty" Champions.

Then in the Semi's Stoughton and Jacobs got past Gushue and Edin setting up the final with Jacobs winning over Stoughton. For the Ladies, Ott was able to beat Ottawa's Homan for the Ladies Championship.

The day opened with two (2) breakfast events; one being Rotary and the second Brockville Business totalling some 50 people served. Then BCC staff cater a luncheon for a about 20 for a member and his guests.

Next up was the Fourth Annual Crusader Golf Tournament. The tournament catered to 108 golfers, all saddled up with carts ready for a 12:30 shotgun start. Then when the golf finished and many partook of the BCC's bar service, staff catered a tournament dinner for some 130 in BCC's main dining room.

Now that all sounds like a bust day! But is wasn't done yet! Being catered in the Club's Granite Hall Wednesday evening was the fund-raising Gala for the Kids of Belarus organized by Dave Shaw and his many supporters. Organizers decorated the Granite Hall in spectacular fashion and the stage was set up for a live show by many of the visiting Belarus children. For the evening, BCC staff served a fine dinner to some 190 guests. That totals over 400 guests in 5 different venues served formally throughout Wednesday July 31st..

CONGRATULATIONS BCC staff for a superb effort in catering to so many of our members and guests. Job well Done!

Bridge Lessons Proving Popular at the BCC

The Brockville Country Club is active Monday evenings with BRIDGE LESSONS. The eight (8) week program running from June 3 to July 29 has proven quite popular with some 30 people participating. The bridge lessons are being conducted by St. Lawrence College instructor Stan Marshall. The lessons are held in the BCC curling lounge with students from both the BCC's membership and the community at large.
The program is appropriate for both those wishing to improve their knowledge of the game of bridge and for novices wishing to learn the game. Half of each lesson focuses on the theory and strategy while the second half the actually playing of hands to illustrate the information covered. Given the success of these Bridge Lesson, it is expected that another class will be organized for the fall.
