Swing & Sweeper's Brave Elements

Saturday October 15, 2911 was the Swing & Sweep, a long established annual event at the Brockville Country Club. And the weather was miserable! But being inside, the curling ice was in great shape and 56 players turned out for the morning curling. Each team played two (2) four-end games, then settled into a great spaghetti lunch in the curling lounge. Outside there was torrential rain and it was very windy. The radar was constantly being checked and indicated there might be a window opening up early afternoon. So following lunch everyone moved to the lower golf lounge (to allow the upstairs to be set up and decorated for the "Gala" event being held that evening .. amazing what goes on simultaneously at the BCC). With everyone downstairs, it was decision time. So a vote was taken .. to play golf, or not to play. With a majority rule set, the vote results said .."Let's Play". And no sooner than the decision was made, the sun came out. Talk about organizing! So virtually everyone suited up and headed for nine (9) holes of golf. It was still very, very wet, cool and blustery but play golf they did. Following golf, it was back for dry clothes and to the golf lounge and bar where Denise and staff had the lounge elegantly set up for the wrap-up meal. Congratulations to Scott Moore for organizing a great day, hanging in when conditions looked bleak and for bringing on the sun. How did he do that? Curling is now in full swing with league play underway and golf is winding down. Great Swing & Sweep gang and hopefully next year the weather will be more cooperative.

Curling Season in Full Swing at BCC

The regular season for Curlers at the Brockville Country Club opened for league play Tuesday, October 11, 2011. The ice has been in since late September and the Shorty Jenkins Curling Classic again hosted. In addition, the curling committee have hosted a number of free curling clinics for new and returning curlers. But now members are excited to be getting back on the ice. League play includes: Coffee Club, Monday Seniors, Monday Night Ladies; Tuesday Day Ladies, Tuesday Night Mens, Wednesday Seniors, Wednesday Night Mixed, Thursday Night Flight, Friday Night Mixed, Sunday Social, Little Rocks & Juniors/Bantam. Openings still available in a number of leagues. So come on out for some great curling this year at the BCC. And remember, The BCC Swing & Sweep .. golf & curling, is planned for this Saturday, October 15th ... so come join the fun!

United Way Tournament at the BCC

The 17th Annual United Way fund-raising golf tournament was held at the Brockville Country Club Saturday, October 1, 2011.

The weather was challenging. Cold, blustery and showers, but some 60 brave souls took on the elements to complete their round and commitement to such a worthy cause.

Organizers Sandra Burton (front second from right) and Matt Raby (back second from right) are shown with many of the volunteers, including Shawn Souder - United Way President and Ben TeKamp - Co-Chair of fund raising committee. The team felt they raised over $10,000 for United Way through registrations, silent auction and contributions. Great effort gang.
Following golf and warming up at the bar, a great meal was served by BCC staff. Then it was to the prize table, and what a prize table it was. Thanks to major sponsors Black & Decker and P&G, the prize table at the United Way tournament is like no other. Everyone went home with a great prize. Be sure to sign up next year for the United Way Golf Tournament at the BCC and you too will help with their fund raiser and be able to dig into such a splendid table of prizes.

9-Hole Ladies League Hold Closing Golf/Lunch

Thursday, September 29th saw the 9-Hole Ladies league hold their closing golf/lunch event at the BCC. Unfortunately you can't fight the weather, and with it being so poor, the golf portion of the event had to be cancelled. But the lunch was very well attended. Joining the ladies was Cecil Brown to present the annual trophy in memory of Marion Brown to Low Gross Champion Sharon Dempsey. The Low Net Champion was Roberta Riddell receiving the annual Mickey Broome Award in memory of Valerie Broome.
Juanita Loan, Mary Hannik and Lillian McNamee received flowers for their long-time golfing commitment and untiring support of the BCC 9-Hole Ladies League. New Ladies Club Captain Janet Lousley was present and Margot Green thanked everyone for their support as she passed on the duties of 9-hole captain to Alma Hansen.
The league, including alumni, meet monthly for lunches (last Thursday of each month) at the BCC during the off-season (except for December).

All-Member's Meeting Held for BCC Golf Course Improvements

On Wednesday evening, September 28, 2011 an "All-Members" meeting was held in the main dining area of the BCC to review architect plans for improvements to the Brockville Country Club's golf course. Course architect Jeff Mingay (shown at left in photo along with BCC's Ray Bushfield) was on hand to present the actual Long Range Improvement Plan (LRIP) envisioned to be implemented over a five (5) year or so period. Ray, Bob Larocque and Jack Kenny also presented aspects of the planning process.

A special LRIP committee has met a number of times with Jeff to develop the plan. The meeting was intended as an information session and to seek input and get member questions answered. Members generally left the meeting excited about the prospects of improvements. Jeff is a student of Stanley Thompson and with Thompson's mark on the course, improvements will ensure this part of the BCC's heritage is retained. We have a great golf course at the BCC. But to rest on one's laurels is folly. As an improvement plan is implemented, we are certain that the BCC will continue to be one of the best golf courses in Eastern Ontario.

Wednesday Senior Men's Hold Closing Lunch

Over 100 Brockville Country Club Senior Men signed up for the Wednesday morning golf play and on Wednesday, September 28, 2011, 66 of them came out for golf and their Closing Lunch. The Wednsesday morning Senior Men's uses a fun format with players each week drawing a start time which determines their playing partners. Organizing chair this year was Al Duffield (left in picture below) and ably supported by Larry Bolton, Fred Joyce, Colin Marriott, Bill Kyle and Chris Butler. A special presentation was made during the lunch to Bud Steele (at right) for his thirteen (13) years of organizing the Wednesday Morning Senior Men's League. Also this year, the seniors donated two thropies in the name of Bud Steele to be presented each year to the BCC Girls and Boys Junior Club Champions. Congratulations Al, Bud and all organizers for operating such a successful Senior Wednesday Morning Men's League over the many many years.

BCC Ladies Show Well in OVGA Intersectionals

The Brockville Country Club Senior Ladies Team had a good showing at the inaugural OVGA Senior Ladies "B" Division played Tuesday, September 19, 2011 coming in second against Hylands, Arnprior and Royal Ottawa. By placing 2nd, this means the BCC will host the division next year.
The BCC ladies team was made up of (from left): Ann McMurray, Bonnie Hardy, Teri deLuis, Tuula Little, Sue Blanchard, Heather Morgan, Sandi Stewart, and Winona Richardson. Congratulations ladies on your great play and the BCC looks forward to being hosts to the OVGA Senior Ladies "B" Division in 2012.

Middaugh and Epping win 15th Shorty Jenkins Curling Classic

The 15th Annual Shorty Jenkins Curling Classic came down to the wire in both Men's and Ladies finals at the Brockville Country Club Sunday Sept 18 following the weekend round robins and semi-finals. The Ladies Champion is the rink of Sherry Middaugh with Shorty Jenkin's neice Jo-Ann Rizzo, Lee Merklinger and Leigh Armstrong. Middaugh took the exciting win with a last rock draw for a one point lead over two-time Shorty Champion; the rink of Rachel Homan. In the men's division, the rink of John Epping, with Scott Bailey, Scott Howard (Glenn Howard's son) and David Mathers, emerged the Shorty winners. The Epping rink had to get by the Glenn Howard rink in the semi's, who in turn had gotten by past-champion Brad Gushue, before taking on and winning against the Chad Allen rink from Brantford.
The 15th annual Shorty Jenkins Curling Classic at the BCC was a huge success. Congratulations to Gord McCrady Jr. (Shorty chairman) and his more than 100 volunteers, committee members and BCC staff for again doing a great job. Changes to the playoff format had one curler state, " you just made one of the best bonspiels in the world better." Accolades were again received for the great ice provided by BCC's ice technician Jonathan Penney and crew, with curlers saying, "it's the best they might have all year". And when the curlers leave happy, everyone at the BCC is happy. Congratulations again on a great 15th Annual Shorty Jenkins Curling Classic.

Shorty Jenkins Curling Classic Ready to Roll at the BCC

The 15th Anniversary edition of the Shorty Jenkins Curling Classic is under way at the Brockville Country Club. Running Thursday through Sunday (September 15 - 18, 2011) the "Shorty" attracts many of the world's best men's and ladies curling teams to the BCC.Glenn Howard's team is back as are the Gushue and Hemmings men's and Homan ladies team to mention a few. The first draw starts Thursday (Sept 15th) at 4:00 PM. The round robin runs through Thursday, Friday and Saturday with the Quarters (9:00 AM); Semi-finals (12:30 PM) and Finals (3:30 PM) played Sunday (Sept 18th). Spectators are more than welcome for a small charge of $5 for Thursday, $10 each day after or a four day pass for just $25. Everything is set to go at the Brockville Country Club. Come see curlers you watch on TV right here in Brockville. The 15th Anniversary Shorty Jenkins Classic is sure to excite!

Men's Senior Intersectional Team Played Tuesday at Glengarry

The Brockville Country Club's Senior Men's Intersectional team travelled to Alexandria, Ontario Tuesday, September 6th to take on teams from Glengarry, Kingsway and Laramac at the Glengarry Golf Course. The result!! A fine showing with our BCC team coming in second. First went to Glengarry (36 pts), 2nd BCC (27 pts), Kingsway 3rd (17 pts) and Laramac with 16 points. By coming second, BCC will have home course advantage next year by hosting the intersectional play. Our BCC team was made up of Ray Lumsden, Doug Lovat, Paul Sloan, Ian Stewart, Sonny Clark, John Frost, Tom Moran, Bob Larocque, Colin Marriott and Kelvin Robinson. All played well with John getting all 6 points in his game. Congratulations to all members of the team for your great play while representing the BCC so well.

Friends of Palliative Care Tournament Huge Success

The 18th Annual Palliative Care Golf Tournament and Banquet was held at the Brockville Country Club Wednesday, August 31, 2011 to rave reviews. The event had the largest turnout ever and raised the most money ever for Brockville's Palliative Care Unit.The morning draw had 104 golfers with 144 golfers in the afternoon draw for a total of 248. It was a great day for golf and Derek and his crew, Denise and her crew and the host of Palliative Care organizers ensured the event ran like clockwork.Following the day's golf, everyone assembled in the much improved "Granite Room" for a cocktail hour and served dinner. With the Granite Room now air conditioned, floor carpeted and acoustic treatment applied, it made for a very pleasant evening for the nearly 300 people in attendance. The highlight of the evening came when co-chairs Dave Publow and Jim Cooper presented a cheque for $140,000 for local palliative care services. Dave, Jim and some 30 volunteers work year-round to put together the event and raise funds from over 160 sponsors and players. It is a very worthy cause. The Brockville Country Club is pleased to be a partner in this great event and its members and staff look forward to hosting the annual Friends of Palliative Care Golf Tournament in 2012 as it has for the past 18 years.

Great Day for BCC Junior Club Championship

The 2011 Junior Program came to a close Monday August 29 with the BCC Junior Club Championships. On a beautiful sunny day following "Irene", BCC crowned Sarah Cushing Girls Club Champion. Congratulations Sarah. First Low Net is Marrisah Heyman.In the boys division, Tyler Watts is the Club's new Junior "A" Champion. First Low Net in the boys "A" is Evan Eastwood. In the boys "B", Mitch Lawn is Boys "B" Champion with Laine Brown taking 1st "B" Low Net. Congratulations to all the Juniors who participated in the Junior Club Championship.The Junior program was organized this year by Jonathan O'Reilly (3rd from right in photo) directly supported by Kent Swirsky and our Pro, Derek MacDonald. Jonathan also wishes to extend a special thank you to volunteers Heather Morgan, Sharon Ellis, Tuula Little, Mo Gariepy, Roger & Bonnie Hardy, Al Perry and Ian Stewart. Of course we think the real reason the young ones love the BCC Junior Golf Program revolves around hot dogs and fries. That's Heather Morgan (standing back left and Sharon Ellis (back seated) coaching their lunch. A big BCC "thank you" goes out to Jonathan and his whole team for running a great Junior Program this year. The next big junior event will be the Parent/Junior Tournament to be held Sunday September 11th starting at 1:42 followed by a spaghetti dinner. See You All There!

Men's Senior Intersectional Team Set

The 2011 version of the BCC Men's Intersectional Team was established over the weekend with 20 some of our seniors participating in the two day, 36 hole qualifier. The team is made up of 2 guys 55 - 59; 2 at 60 - 64; 2 65+; 2 at large and 2 alternates over 60. Making this year's team are: Tom Moran, Ian Stewart. Doug Lovat, John Frost, Bob Larocque, Colin Marriott, Sonny Clark, Ray Lumsden and alternates Paul Sloan & Kelvin Robinson. The intersectional will be played at Glengarry September 6th against Glengarry, Larrimac & Kingsway. CONGRATULATIONS to all for making the team and good luck in the Intersectional play Sept 6th from all of us at the Brockville Country Club.

Klyde Pots His Second Hole-in-One

BCC's Klyde Brayton dunked his second ever HOLE-IN-ONE Friday August the 26th at the Brockville Country Club. Klyde got his hole-in-one on hole #9, better know as our "Little Misery" although you could say it wasn't so miserable Friday. Playing with Doug Locke, Joe Latham and Terry VanAsseldonk, Klyde used an 8 iron. The boys said the ball landed right beside the hole, then just dropped in!
This is Klyde's second hole-in-one, the first coming way back in 1975 on the 266 yard, par 4 at Cedar Valley. That's right, a par 4! Makes Little Misery sound easy.

Club Champions Crowned Aug 20th Weekend at the BCC

Through a storm delay Saturday and a heavy rain delay then suspension Sunday for lightning, players persevered during the stormy weekend of August 20 - 21 allowing the Brockville Country Club to crown its Club Champions. Some 144 players took part in the various flights. In the end Leigh Ann Ellis becomes the women's champion for the 11th time firing an even par 72 then a par 37 (109) for the 27 holes. Mike O'Reilly becomes men's Club Champion for the first time in a wide-open men's "A" division shooting even par 72 then 78 (150) for the 36 hole marathon.Mike, second from left is toasted following his Men's "A" Club Championship. 2nd was Logan Warren (152), Jack Laforty & Nick Souder at 153, Phil Nihmey at 154 and defending champ Ardis Lindsay & Adam Folco at 155. Men's "B" Champ is Scott Moore at 77 (restricted to one round). One shot back was Paul Darby, John Rennick & Thomas Moran and 2 back Jason Easton. Men's "C" Champ is Tom Blanchard at 84 & one shot up on John Ackerman, 2 up on Ted Allen and 3 up on Gary Bruce. Men's "D" Champ is Henry Horbay at a 94 and one up on Mike Moran. In Seniors Men's, the Champ is Chris Boyd with a 147 for the 2 rounds. That was 6 ahead of Ray Lumsden and 11 better than 3rd Paul Sloan. In Super Seniors Men's, the Champ is George Hamilton with a 10 shot lead over Warren Richardson.

Leigh Ann Ellis, the Ladies "A" Champ managed the feat by being 10 shots ahead of Emily Peters and 14 better than Teri deLuis. In the Ladies "A+" class Lucy Pouliot shot an 85 then a 43 for the second day 9 to take the class. That was 6 shots better than Marsha Lindsay and 10 better than Sandi Stweart. In Women's "B", Denise Fraser took top spot with Sue Blanchart taking low net. In Women's "C", Linda Lunsden won low gross with Ded Souder taking low net. In Senior Womens, Heather Morgan captured top spot with Sharon Ellis winning low net.

It was a great Brockville Country Club Championship., even considering the weather, with a total of 144 players being the largest turnout in many years.

Our Agronomist Makes BCC Visit

For the past 7 years or so, the BCC has had Dave Smith, Agronomist contracted to work with Lawrence, our Superintendent for the betterment of our golf course. And great results have been evident. Many will remember opening seasons with temporary greens and huge fairway glitches. Not so in recent years! Dave, (photo center) met with Lawrence (left), Green Chair Jack Alexander (right) and green committee and Board members to discuss the state of our course. Overall the nutrient level is "right on the money". The cultural management, i.e. Light; Water; Nutrients & Airflow is a balancing act and has been frustrating this year due to the very wet spring and inability to aerate although aerating is set to resume. Tree management is also extremely important for proper light and air flow and Dave will be detailing a go-forward tree management program for the BCC. The results of following Dave's recommendations for greens, fairways and trees over the years has been spectacular. The BCC looks forward to working with Dave for many years to come.

Staff have Blast at Staff Party

During late summer each year our staff organize a BCC Staff Party which usually turns into a blast. And this year was no exception. Board members meeting in the Board room can attest to that fact given the hooting, hollering and laughter coming from the dinning room.The event was organized by employees James, Christianne, John and with Mark doing the BBQ. About 23 staff participated. The afternoon opened with golf; some doing 18 and others 9. Following golf a great BBQ meal has served in the dinning room with all the trimmings. After dinner, a substantial prize table was distributed and staff wish to thank all members who contributed monies and prizes. Also thanks to staff who volunteered to worked the afternoon, thus keeping all aspects of the club open. BCC has a great staff and it is fun to see them organize and enjoy their staff party each year.

Emily Wins in Ottawa

Just back from competing in British Columbia, BCC's Emily Peters participated and won the Junior Girls Match Play in Ottawa. Well done Emily. And the practice never seems to end. Emily can be seen in the photo under the watchfull eye of our Club Pro, Derek MacDonald as she continues to work on her game. It is never easy to excel and the hard work being put in by Emily has produced winning results. We could all learn a bit from her work ethic!

BCC Plays Well in Border League Tourny

Our Brockville Country Club Border League Team had a good showing in recent tournament play coming in second to Cornwall by just 12 shots. Other Border League clubs taking part in addition to Cornwall and the BCC included St. Lawrence University; Gananoque; Morrisburg; Prescott; Smith Falls; and Summerheights. Our BCC team included Dale Watts, Derek MacDonald, Ray Lumsden; Mike O'Reilly; Adam Folco; Ben MacDonald, Ray Bushfield; Tory Deschamps; Chris Glashan; Jack Laforty; Kevin Beattie and Pete Gilder. A special mention goes to Adam Folco for being low man of the day shooting a 72. Congratulations Team for representing yourselves and the BCC so well.

OVGA Masters Championship at the BCC

The Brockville Country Club, August 8th, was the site of the Ottawa Valley Golf Association's (OVGA) Men's Master Championship. Some 50 players, representing 24 clubs participated on a bright sunny but muggy day. The field of 40+ year olds was divided into two flights with the overall Masters Gross winner being Marc Carrier of GreyHawk, shooting even par (72). Top BCC members were Rob Charbonneau and Jack LaForty tied for 5th shooting 79s. Also competing were BCC's Ardis Lindsay (81), and Peter Gilder (82). Well done gang! Seated is Dan McGee, OVGA Tournament Chair inputting results as they come in and standing, Rai King, BCC member and Director of Golf Quebec. Rai noted that the OVGA has 79 member clubs and some 18,000 total members. There are 7 regions within Golf Quebec, one of which is the OVGA. Rai further indicated that the BCC and its members have been very supportive of the OVGA by hosting at least one OVGA event a year for many years. "The BCC course is quite polular with players. It is in great shape and somewhat central", stated Rai. And, of course, the BCC aims to please both its members and guests.

BCC Juniors Advance in Intersectionals

The Brockville Country Club hosted the third round at the BCC Tuesday, August 2nd of the Junior Intersectional play. Our Juniors played at Glengary and Prescott in prior matches to determine, over the three events, which team advances to the next round. By taking 29 points Tuesday at the BCC our Juniors assured that they advance against winners of two other Ottawa area divisions. Just who our BCC Juniors will play and where has yet to be determined as not all the round robins have been completed.Pictured with BCC's junior team are our Junior program coordinators at right Jonathan O'Reilly and Kent Swirsky and at left our Club Pro Derek MacDonald. Emily Peters at CDN Championship in BC

The Brockville Country Club's Emily Peters is currently playing in the Canadian Junior Girls Championship being held at Quilchena Golf & Country Club in Richmond, British Columbia from August 2nd to August 5th. Emily qualified by placing 3rd in the Quebec Provincial Championship. Emily tees off at 9:30 AM (PST) Tuesday, August 2nd. There will be a cut after 2 rounds. These are the top junior girl golfers from across the nation and we all wish Emily the best of luck competing against them.

UPDATE: Emily shot a 77 in her final round today following two 79's and a 78 to finish the tournament in 34th place (+21) putting her in the top 25% of the total 127 players. Great effort Emily. The winner was at -6; only 7 players were under par.

Sonny's Scamble has Everyone Cheering

When Sonny organizes it, you know it will be a blast. And it was! The "Scramble" actually started Friday evening, July 29th in the BCC golf lounge, with a spaghetti dinner. Yup, that's Sunny first in line. Following the great meal, the fun process of putting the teams together started. Sonny and his volunteers had separated the 108 signed-up players into six(6) boxes, based on handicap. Then the draw process began to form the 36 3-person teams. One "A" or "A+" as captain, one "B" or "B+" as second and one "C" or "C+" as the third member of each team. With close to 100 players turning out for the Friday evening session, you can bet the kibitzing made for a fun evening.
With the teams established, everyone returned Saturday morning July 30th for a breakfast, as part of the package, and to select their favourite teams.
At 12:30 PM Saturday the horn sounded to start the shotgun start with two teams (six players) on each hole to play the scramble. And it was a beautiful sunny day for Sonny's scramble .... we are sure all part of the organizing! Following play, everyone again gathered in the golf lounge for the prize presentations. Given the draw process, the teams were very even giving everyone a chance for both the "gross" and "net" prizes. Thanks to Sonny Clark, Jonathan O'Reilly and their team of volunteers for organizing such a super event. You can be assured, we are all looking forward to the next "Sonny's Scramble".

A Little Bit of Hawaii at BCC

The BCC held an "Hawaiian Luau" for its members and guests Friday evening, July 29th. The evening opened with Hawaiian inspired cocktails followed by the featured meal of: tropical salads, Lomi Lomi salmon, Kulua pig (yup, the whole pig), roasted Mahi Mahi with passion fruit and ginger, chicken long rice, coconut cake with pinapple curd (hummm gooood!).
Following the meal, the diners were entertained by the Brockville Thrill Dancers. A fun time was had by all. The Hawaiian Luau was just one of many themed dinner evenings presented by Denise, Joanne and staff over the year for the Club's members and guests. And while all this was going on in the BCC's upper main dining room, the lower golf lounge was hosting a full house for the team draw and dinner for "Sonny's Scramble". See related story.

BCC Hosts St Mary's Golf Tournament

The Brockville Country Club was again the site for the 3rd Annual St Mary Senior Girls "Crusader" Fundraiser Basketball Golf Tournament held Wednesday, July 27th at the BCC. The proceeds from the tournament goes toward the St Mary Senior Girl's basketball team. Some 108 players headed out in the 1:00 PM shotgun start followed by a banquet and huge prize table awards held in the BCC's main dinning room.Matt Reil, teacher and coach of the Crusaders shows his stuff teeing off hole #12. Helped by Jeff Bates and some 25 to 30 school and parent volunteers, the effort pays off in assisting the team reach its goals. Last year the fundraiser helped send the girls to Florida where they won the tournament. This year the team will be hosting the 2011 OFSAA "AA" Girls Basketball Championships at St Mary Catholic High School in Brockville from November 24th to the 26th.
It was a beautiful sunny day and Matt wanted to ensure that Derek, Lawrence, Denise, James and their staffs were thanked for ensuring all aspects of the day ran smoothly. Hot Ladies Jewel Box Invitational

Rivermead's Pam Fraser had the hot hand, on one of the hottest days of the year, in the Brockville Country Club's Ladies Jewel Box Invitational Golf Tournament held Thursday, July 21st. Some 41 golfers played a modified shotgun starting at 9:00 AM. Entries came from Garrison, Glen Lawrence, Mississippi, Perth, Smith Falls, Rivermead, Hylands, Glen Mar, Carlton and Rivendell along with some 20 players from the BCC. Even with record breaking temperatures, there were only two cancellations. Thanks to Denise & Derek for ensuring lots of water was on the course.
Fraser fired an even par 72 to edge BCC's Teri deLuis by 2 shots for the overall "A" flight chnampionship. Other BCC ladies appearing at the prize table were Marsha Lindsay, Helen Logan, Marilee Taylor and Isabel Cameron.
Immediately after golf, dinner was served followed by the prize presentations.
Thanks to the many volunteers for again organizing a great Ladies Jewel Box Invitational.

Men's Senior Invitational Held at BCC

The BCC Men's Senior Golf Tournament was held at the BCC Friday July 15, 2011. The 32nd annual event attracted 130 players to the Friday afternoon shotgun and banquet. The long standing event attracts golfers from many regional clubs; examples this year included Trillium Woods, Arnprior, Mississippi, Loyalist and Village Green.

Overall winner was Phil Howlett (shooting a 73) of Trillium Woods, Belleville with second going to BCC's Ardis Lindsay, just one shot back.

The event has many age groups; "A" (50 to 54) thru to "G" (80 & over). Other BCC players getting low gross & net prizes over the various groups included: Dale Robertson, Rob Moug, John Rennick, Mike Lawn, Ian Stewart, Paul Sloan, Bob Larocque, Dave Dargie, Doug Lovat, Don Houle, George Hamilton, Ralph Wheeler, Chris Hansen, Bill Logan, Pat Alair, Hugh Johnston & Al Duffield (pictured is Smith Hazzard watching his putt fall).

Congratulations to Don Houle and his committee for again organizing such a fine traditional BCC event.

Teri deLuie Makes Senior Canadian Team

Recently BCC's Teri deLuis competed in the 2011 Ladies Provincial Senior Championship help on the "Heritage" course at the Blainvillier Golf Club in Blainville, Quebec (across Autoroute from Mirabel Airport). Teri came second to Susan Pearl of Rideau View by just a one stroke margin.
At the conclusion, the three golfers composing the Senior Women's Team representing Golf Quebec was established. The three are Susan Pearl, Rideau View; Louise Boivin, Le Boise and Teri deLuis of the BCC.
The team will be playing in the Royale Cup Canadian Women's Senior Championship to be held at Whitevale Golf Club in Whitevale, Ontario from August 22 to 25.
Congratulations Teri and the very best of luck at the Canadian Senior Championship in August.

Peacock Notches his First Ace

Doug Peacock, the former long time Club Professional at the Brockville Country Club potted his first ever hole-in-one recently at the BCC. Doug indicated it was his first ever hole-in-one in all of his 60 years of playing golf. Playing with John Williams, John McLean and Carley Running, Doug got his hole-in-one on our Little Misery (hole #9) using a 9 iron. Congratulations Doug! Maybe there is still hope for the rest of us!

Ladies & Mens Intersectional Teams Show Well

Both our Mens and Ladies Intersectional Teams played very well in their Ottawa Valley Golf Association (OVGA) matches recently.

The Ladies played Monday July 11th at the Royal Ottawa Golf Club against Royal Ottawa; Arnprior and the Hylands Golf Club. The gals did very well finishing second with 23 points. Royal Ottawa was first with 35 points; Arnprior took 17 points and Hylands had 9 points. This means our ladies remain in the "B" division and BCC will host the event in 2012.

Members of our Ladies Intersectional team were: Marsha Lindsay (Captain), Leigh-Ann Ellis, Sharon Ellis, Lucy Pouliot, Ann McMurray, Pam Frost, Bonnie Hardy and Mary Quigley. Great job ladies!

Our Mens Intersectional Team played Saturday July 9th at the Morrisburg Golf Club against Morrisburg, Champlain and Irish Hills. Our men did exceptionally well taking 50 of a possible 60 points. This means our men will move up a division to "N" next year. Making up our BCC team were: Tommie Moran, Tory Deschamps, Mike O'Reilly, Chris Glashan, Chris Boyd, Ryan Preston, Ray Lumsden, Dale Watts, Kevin Beattie, Adam Folco and alternates John Taylor and Jeff Ford. Way to play gang with both teams representing the BCC so well.

BCC Member/Guest Day Fun Time

The 2011 Member/Guest Day was held at the Brockville Country Club Saturday July 9th. The event had 88 registered players with close to 100 for the dinner.
Winners of the two-man best ball were Ryan Preston and Jeremy Boyd with second place going to Doug and Matt Locke. NIKE rep Mike Doyon set up a demo on #1 tee and anyone who hit a Nike driver got a ticket for a draw. Nike then drew some 8 prizes with the Grand Winner of the VR Pro Driver being Kellie Howe. Great Prize!
Other sponsors included: Molson; Beaus; Pellar Estate Wines; and Mark of Photovisions made custom score cards for the Member/Guest. Also Derek MacDonald and Emily Peters conducted a "Beat the Pro" on hole #9.
Special thanks to Kent Swirsky, Doug and Matt Locke, Paul Darby, Denise, Joanne and their kitchen staff for organizing and putting on such a great event. We are sure our guests were impressed with the day and we all look forward to our next Member/Guest.

Rotary Classic a Great Event at BCC

The 2011 Canadian Tire Rotary Golf Classic was held at the Brockville Country Club Wednesday July 6, 2011. A full field turned out for the charity event. The weather looked a little threatening .... but, no problem ... it turned out to be a beautiful day.

The golfers played a "scramble" following the 12:30 PM shotgun start. Following golf, participants and guests were treated to a BCC buffet in the "Granite Room" .. and with the new air conditioning fully functional, it was a very pleasant environment on a muggy July day. BCC staff served the salad; the main course was a buffet with beef, chicken, potatoes and veggies. The desert was again served by BCC staff. Great job gang!

While all this was going on, the Rotary organizers were busy with an extensive "silent auction". In the end they wrote a check for $20,000 for their charity of choice. The Rotary do a great job of organizing a very worth while event and the BCC look forward to again hosting their "Classic" in 2012.

Air Conditioning Units arrive for Granite Room

There was excitement at the BCC Wednesday morning as a hugh crane arrived to unload four (4) air conditioning units from the delivery transport. The air conditioning units are for the Granite Room and part of the project to upgrade the Granite Room into a super event facility for summer months. In addition to air, an electrical upgrade has been completed and removable floor carpet tiles have been received. The next step is to get the acoustics under control. The BCC is very fortunate to have Bob Snelgrove assisting in designing a solution for the improved acoustics. The air is to be operational for the July 6th Rotary Classic. Other improvements will be completed during July and August. The plan is to have everthing in place for a special Member Open House in August and certainly for the Palliative Care event Wednesday, August 31st. The Granite Room improvements have been made possible through the receipt of grants from the 1000 Islands CDC and the Trillium Foundation, for which the BCC is most grateful. Over the fall and winter months, the goal is to book a full slate of events for next summer so that a good amount of revenue can be generated to help with golf course improvements. Any member that knows of a possible event or has event ideas is encouraged to forward them to your Board members.

Beautiful Day for OVGA Junior Field Day at BCC

Monday, June 27, 2011 the Brockville Country Club was invaded by some 100 juniors for an Ottawa Valley Golf Associations's (OVGA) Junior Field Day.
They came from far and wide representing many golf clubs in the Ottawa Valley region including: Royal Ottawa, Eagle Creek, Buckingham, Rivermead, Pakenham, Rideau View, Hylands, Dragonfly, Pembroke, Prescott, Glengarry, Outaouais, Hautes Plaines, Smith Falls, Kanata, GreyHawk, Tecumseh, Algonquin, Emerald Lakes, Richmond and our very own BCC.
And how would you like to have a swing like this young fellow! Shooting the low scores of the day; that being 78's, were Jonathan Whittemore, Royal Ottawa; Jon Pike, Eagle Creek and Justin Chenier, Buckingham. It was a beautiful sunny day, the course was in great shape and we are sure the OVGA Junior Field Day was a great success.

BCC "Country Summer Picnic" well attended

The Brockville Country Club's "Country Summer Picnic" was held in the main dining room Friday evening, June 24, 2011. The event was well attended with about 100 fun-loving BCC members and guests attending. Novel to the event was the wearing of jeans in the main dining room to help with the atmosphere.
The tasty meal included BBQ chicken, vegies & new potatoes, baked beans, salads galore and a strawberry shortcake desert following some entertainment.
That entertainment was The Brockville Thrill Dancers. Lots of country music and great dancing but no rumored square dancing.
It was a fun evening and a great meal and we all look forward to the next special events: July 1 Member Flag Day BBQ and Hawaiian Night July 29, 2011.

Successful Screen for the Cure at BCC June 17th

Friday, June 17, 2011 at the Brockville Country Club was the scene of the third annual SCREEN FOR THE CURE Golf Tournament. The tournament, spearheaded by Don Moore and Dr. Bill Redman, raises monies for new colorectal screening equipment for the Brockville General Hospital to asist in early detection and cancer cure.

The tournament had a full field of 144 participants for the 12:30 pm shotgun start. The day was a beautiful sunny day and the BCC course was in great shape. From all participants

that qualified, Keith Blake had his name drawn to try a 50 foot putt for some $800.00. Keith came close, sliding his putt by within 6 inches ... but no cigar.

A lot of camaraderie and a fine meal followed with winners and prizes presented. The announcement of importance was that the 2011 Screen for the Cure tournament raised over $35,000 for the BGH to help in their ability to provide additional state-of-the-art care.

A great tournament for a worthy cause and we all look forward to the 4th Annual Screen for the Cure in 2012.

A Trio of Holes-In-Ones at the BCC

The first Hole-In-One for 2011 at the Brockville Country Club was made by Graham Thompson. Graham got his hole-in-one on the testy hole #17 on Wednesday, May 11, 2011 and was his first ever. Graham was playing with Rai King, John Frost and Ron Healy.
Congratulations Graham.

The second Hole-In-One at the Brockville Country Club this year came from Ken Jordan. Ken was playing with Brian Baker, Doug Locke and Duston Payne. The hole-in-one came on BCC's Little Misery (hole #9) and Ken used a 9 iron.

The third Hole-In-One for 2011 at the Brockville Country Club was made by Larry Bolton while he was playing his first round in the Wednesday Morning Senior's League. Larry was playing with Ian Stewart, Carl Running and Bill Blight and his hole-in-one also came on Little Misery (hole #9). Larry was using an 8 iron and immediately shouted, "it's in the jar" only to have his mates confirm jumping in the air and yelling, "it's in .. it's in".This was the second hole-in-one for Larry having potted one in 2006 on hole #15.

Blanchard Sinks 50 footer for 2,500 Bucks

The 23rd Annual Brockville and District Chamber of Commerce Mixed Golf Tournament held at the Brockville Country Club Friday, June 3, 2011 had a couple of exciting new additions to their event. The Peter Publow/Cobblestone Realty Putt for $2,500 and the Wills Transfer Ltd $100,000 Shootout. Participants had to buy into the events then qualify during a putting contest. Then one name was drawn from all who qualified for the putting contest and five names drawn for the shootout.
In the case of the putting contest, the drawn name was Tom Blanchard. Those drawn for the shootout were: Anne MacDonald, Kevin Beattie, Mark Earl, Bob Pierce & Hugh Hammond.
Tom faced a downhill, breaking, 50 foot putt on BCC's #18 green for $2,500. One try only ... and Tom (at right in picture) DRAINED THE PUTT! The many spectators were estatic. Sponsor Peter Publow (at left) was shocked! It was a great putt, breaking about 4 feet and landing right into the heart of the cup. It certainly had everyone buzzing throughout the tournament's dinner and prize presentations that followed.
As for the shootout, five valent efforts, but no cigar. Congratulations Tom! You certainly capped a great Chamber golf tournament in fine fashion.

Beautiful Day at BCC for Chamber's 23rd Annual

The Brockville Country Club played host to a large field for the Brockville and District's 23rd Annual Mixed Golf Tournament, Friday June 3, 2011. And it was a beautiful day! The sun was shining and the course was in great shape.

Participants registered and were provided lunch prior to the 12:30 PM shotgun start. Derek, BCC's Club Pro, is seen below making the announcements and getting everyone saddled up for the start. Ladies and gentlemen .. start your engines!
Following golf, the Wills Transfer $100,000 Shoot-out and Peter Publow/Cobblestone Realty putt for $2,500 contests were held. See separate News Story for results.
After the special events, participants were treated to a fine meal by Denise and her BCC staff. Given the many volunteers and long list of sponsors, we are sure the 23rd Annual Brockville & District Chamber of Commerce Mixed Golf Tournament was a huge success. All of us at the BCC aleady look forward to the 24th annual in 2012.

Ladies Have Great Opening Event May 21st

The Ladies' Golf Opening was held under sunny skies on Saturday May 21, 2011 with 43 BCC member players and one of the promotional ladies taking part. A four person scramble with a 1 PM shotgun start was the game of the day.

The team of Marsha Lindsay, Jennifer Baker, Jan Ashe and Joan Cavanagh won with a score of 79. A delicious dinner was served following golf in the golf lounge, which was then followed by the Spring Meeting of the Ladies' Golf Section, chaired by Ladies Captain Joan Byers.
Janet Lousley was presented a "Break 100" pin. Joan Byrers also has pins for Fran Nevay and Nancy Vanderbarren who broke 100 last year and for Sue Blanchard who broke 90.

The next Ladies' event of note will be Wednesday June 22nd which is Ladies' Day for both member and promotional ladies. There will be afternoon golf and a great speaker from Interval House over dinner. Ladies are invited to look for the notice of this upcoming event.

Men's 2011 "Opening" a Success in Spite of Rain

The BCC Men's Opening was held Saturday, May 14, 2011 with 102 members registered. Great turnout gang! Oh Yah! It rained all day. So golf was actually cancelled with everyone invited back to the BCC for the scheduled lunch.

But that didn't stop the hardy. A 3 person 9-hole scramble was quickly organized and 15 of BCC's finest headed out in the rain to complete an improvised and soggy match.
At noon, the vast majority of the Men's Opening registrants returned for a fine lunch prepared by our staff. Special thanks to Denise and Joanne who were able to pull the lunch up to noon from 2:00 pm with very little notice.
Following lunch, Club Captain Dale Watts and our Pro Derek MacDonald drew names for a long list of prizes. Along with Dale and Derek members thanked Paul Darby and Kent Swirsky for organizing the day and getting the large draw put together.

It may have rained, but the 2011 BCC Men's Opening was a great success with a super turnout of members. The gang is raring to go ... the course is in great shape .... so bring on the sun!!

Congratulations to Pam and John Frost

A feat we are sure has never been achieved before has been reached by the Frosts.
Pam Frost has just been elected President of the Canadian Ladies Senior Golf Association. The first member of BCC to hold such a prestigous position in the Canadian golf world. And John Frost is the incoming President of the Canadian Men's Senior Golf Association.
These are two completely separate organizations with each election made on an individual basis. Both Pam and John are Golf Canada (RCGA) accredited Level 3 Rules Officials which permits them to officiate events to the provincial level. Pam will oversee the major Ladies event at Niagara-on-the-Lake in September as well as matches against the US at Greenbriar in West Virginia. John has major events at St. Georges and Lambton in August; the Okanagan in September and International matches against the Brits and Americans in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
A number of other BCC members are also members of these two Canadian Senior organizations: Donna Scott and Marsha Lindsay in the Ladies and Rai King, Ardis Lindsay, John Allen, Graham Thompson, John Broome, Stuart Spalding and Doug Lovat in the Men's. Most clubs will never have one of the Presidencies filled from within their membership let alone having both filled at the same time from the same club ..... and from the same home!
Congratulations Pam and John. All members of the BCC should be very proud of your accomplishments.

Trees DOWN from Storm

Yes, last week's storm with winds up to 105 kilometers per hour took its toll at the Brockville Country Club. About eight trees came down, but fortunately none were key visually or effect how certain holes have to be played. The picture shows one huge tree down that was located just across from the BCC's halfway hut near the tees at hole #10. If the tree had fallen at a different angle, it could well have flattened the hut.
Special thanks to Lawrence and his grounds crew for quickly cleaning up the damage allowing golf play to continue uninterrupted. Now if just the rain would stop and the sun would come out ......

OCA Awards Tom Harrington

Ian McGillis, Director of Rules of the Ontario Curling Association (OCA) attended curling's year-end meeting at the BCC to make achievement prsentations to members of the BCC. In the photo, Ian (left) is shown presenting a Provincial Exceptional Coaching Award to Tom Harrington. Over the years, Tom has coached his daughter's curling team to multiple "provincials". To see a team from Brockville make the top eight (8) in Ontario is a real accommplishment. And behind such success is often the coach. The award was voted on by Tom's peers, making it all that more significant. The BCC congratulations Tom on his coaching award and we are sure his daughters are also most appreciative.

During the Curling year-end meeting, Ian McGillis (at left), Director of Rules , Ontario Curling Association was in town to present two of our BCC rinks with the 2011 Dominion Silver Tankard Provincial Championship official banner. Congratulations to skip Keil Gallinger (at right), plus Aaron Glazier, Matt Hone & Gord McCrady making up the first team and skip Rob Bushfield (center) and Nate Etherington, Andrew McCrae & Derek MacDonald comprising the 2nd team. The Tankard is played as a two-team, total-points event.

Well done guys! Champions all!! It is a great accomplishment to be Provincial champions and the BCC is certainly proud of your feat.

Renovated Pro Shop Getting Great Reviews

The Pro Shop has a new look! With a new coat of paint; a rearrangement of the display and counter area; new mechandize and new display racks; the freshened up Pro Shop is getting great reviews. Congratulations to Derek MacDonald and all those he roped into helping for creating a new and appealing look to our Pro Shop. We are sure it will result in increased sales to both members and guests. So come on in to your BCC Pro Shop, browze a little and pick up you golf needs. And remember, Derek is available to fit you with proper clubs and will also schedule you for a golf lesson or two. To improve your game this year, have a chat with Derek, your BCC Club Pro, and he will be sure to take a few strokes off your game.

Easter Sunday Brunch Well Attended

The Brockville Country Club's Sunday brunch Easter Sunday was very well attended with over 190 members and guests participating. That's right; 190!! Not only was the main dinning room full but the curling lounge was also utilized to handle the great turn-out. And of course Denise, chef Joanne and her staff presented a supurb brunch for all present. The next-up Mother's day Brunch May 8th is nearing a sell-out, so don't wait to book. Also in the planning stages is the Prime Rib Dinner evening; a Father's Day Brunch and a Texan Night is being planned for July. Well done Food & beverage department! Your efforts are very much appreciated.

"Sip 'n' Snak" Cart on the Move!

Today, Good Friday, was a beautiful day, with many members taking advantage of the BCC now being OPEN. And today also saw BCC's "Sip 'n' Snak" mobile beverage & food cart operational. That is Cassie behind the wheel with Denise in the background. Cassie will be your cart server starting mornings with Maude taking over mid afternoons.
This year the cart will be on-the-move bringing your favourite drinks and snacks directly to you. The cart will start by the half-way house then travel to: #9, #8, #7, #6, #5, #4, #16, #15, #14, #13, #12, #11, #10, back past the halfway house then on around again. You can expect to see the cart at least 3 times during your round.
Congratulations to Doug Lousley, Denise and the F&B department for working hard to bring you improved on-course service this year. Cassie and Maude are raring to go! Now all we need is great member patronage!!

YES! The BCC is OPEN for the 2011 Season

The Brockville Country Club opened for the 2011 golf season Wednesday, April 20, 2011. But given the cold rainly weather, no one took the challenge and played Wednesday. Soooo .... the first brave BCC members to golf this 2011 season took to the course Thurday morning, April 21st.

Pictured above are Warner Bischof, Alun Jenkins and Neale Buxton, found just finishing hole #4 Thurdsay, and win the prize as the first BCC golfers for 2011 following course opening.

Friday, that is Good Friday, is expected to be warmer with sunny periods and over 170 BCC members and guests have booked tee times. Have a super day gang. It is great to see the 2011 golf season finally upon us!

BCC Now OPEN for 2011 Season

Wednesday, April 20, 2011 was OPENING DAY at the Brockville Country Club. The weather was not cooperative, but Lawrence and his crew had the course in great shape for opening day. The greens have been rolled and cut; the fairways have been cut, and the sand traps have been raked. BCC's on-line tee booking system for members has been active, with Good Friday already showing 173 players registered. Bill Logan even has the system sending confirmation emails back to members when registering. Great job Bill.

BCC Clean-up Day Well Attended

Saturday, April 16 was Member Volunteer "Clean-up Day". Some 35 members turned up on an overcast day with rakes and gloves to lend a hand in cleaning up the golf course to get ready for opening day. Congratulations to Jack Alexander, Lawrence Bouwhuis and team leaders John Rennick, Dave Gorman, Don Moore and Winona Richardson for organizing a very productive day. We are sure all members will appreciate your work in helping to spruce up the course. Now, if we could just get some warm, sunny weather!!

We Have Provincial Champions at BCC!!

Provincial Champions ... that's right!! Two Brockville Country Club curling rinks emerged as "Champions" of the Ontario Curling Association's (OCA) Silver Tankard Provincial Curling Championship held in Ajax on the weekend. BCC team Keil Gallinger, Aaron Glazier, Matt Hone & Gord McCrady and team Rob Bushfield, Nate Etherington, Andrew McCrae & Derek MacDonald emerged as winners in the two-team combined-points championship. The BCC teams had qualified in our zone, then won in the "regionals" held in Sterling on Saturday to enable them to go on to the "provincials" in Ajax Sunday. Congratulations guys! You should all be very proud to have represented yourselves and the BCC so well by taking all the marbles. WOW! The BCC has Provincial Curling Champions in our midst.

New BCC Reciprocal Golf Course in Syracuse

Your BCC Pro Shop has added TIMBER BANKS Golf Course, North Syracuse area, New York, as a new reciprocal course for BCC Members. This is a new course designed by Nicklaus Design Group that looks exciting. The course may be open as early as the weekend of April 2nd. Check out their hole-by-hole flyover at: http://www.timberbanks.com/media/course_map/course_map_index.html The course is located at 8184 River Road Baldwinsville. (Exit I-81 at Cicero, go west on RT31, cross I-481, continue on RT31 through bridge then left to course - right goes to Radisson). All tee times for reciprocals need to be made by our Pro Derek. BCC Spring OPEN HOUSE Planned

The Membership Committee of the Brockville Country Club will hold a spring OPEN HOUSE, Saturday, April 9, 2011. The hours of operation will be from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Ottawa Golf Show Means Season Close!

The Ottawa Gatineau Golf Expo was held over the weekend of March 12 - 13, 2011 at the Ottawa Athletic Club, and can only mean the season is getting close. Pictured are Derek and Jack with Jeff Bauder, Publisher/Editor-in-Chief of Flagstick Magazine now in its 15th year.
Other BCC members were also spotted at the show (Kelvin, Sonny) soaking in all the new equipment and promotions. It is always great to keep in touch with the industry and what other Clubs are doing. The well attended Ottawa Golf show is certainly one such venue. Bring on the golf season, we are all raring to go!

BCC's Jonathan Penney at THE BRIER

Canada's twelve best curling teams are currently playing "The Brier" at the John Labatts Center in London Ontario. The best "Ice Technicians" are also there! And one of those ice technicians is Brockville Country Club's Jonathan Penney.

Jonathan volunteered and was accepted to join renowned ice makers Hans Wuthrich and Mark Shurek out of Manitoba. With Jonathon's tuitoring from Shorty Jenkins and handling of the Shorty Jenkins Curling Classic at the BCC for years, he was a welcome addition to The Brier Ice Crew.
Jonathan was up to London mid last week; made it back to handle the EOSSAA and 1000 Islands Mixed Bonspiels on the weekend at the BCC, then back Sunday evening to work the week in London for the Brier. WOW, quite an agenda.
It is interesting, as Jonathan noted, that seven (7) of the twelve teams at the Brier this year have played in the Shorty Classic in Brockville.
Congratulations Jonathan! We are sure the experience will be great and you will have lots of tall tails upon your return.

BCC Hosts 1000 Islands Mixed Spiel

Following right on the heals of the EOSSAA School kids bonspiel, the 1000 Islands Mixed Bonspiel got under way Friday evening, March 4th and continued through Saturday and Sunday. Sixteen teams, made up of 2 ladies & 2 men each, participated.
Friday evening had 2 draws; Saturday 4 draws; the Semi's Sunday morning and the Finals Sunday afternoon. Teams joining Brockville rinks included: Utica, N.Y.; Buckingham, Que.; Naven and Armprior, Ont. Winning the "A" Event was Buckingham's: Stephan Paquette, Francine Payant, Serge Payant & Cynthia Paquette. The "B" Event went to Steve Lodge, Arron Glazier, Jen Donavon & Virtoria Kitchen of Brockville. "C" went to Bob Chick, Anne Chick, Doug Beauchamp & Joan Sands also of Brockville. It was a full weekend with Karaoke Friday evening and music to Healy & Orr Saturday night. Some 40 members & guests joined the curlers Saturday evening for a fun time. Congratulations to Derek, Rob, Luc & staff for organizing a great event. The organizing team say they are on for next year and the spiel will be Bigger & Better. Hard to Believe!

EOSSAA Curling Playdowns at BCC Mar. 3-4

Busy, busy days at the Brockville Country Club! Thursday and Friday, March 3 & 4 saw over 100 students, making up 23 curling teams and spares, plus teachers and parents converge on the BCC for the two-day EOSSAA (Eastern Ontario Secondary Schoolf Athletic Association) curling playdowns. Participating were boys, girls and mixed teams. Each team was guaranteed 3 games in a round-robin format with winners progressing to the Semi-finals and finals on day two (Friday).

Teams came from far and wide, including: Iroquois, Winchester, Kingston, Cornwall, Alexandria, Gananoque, Pembroke, Russell, Almonte, Douglas, Napanee, Perth, Smith Falls, and, of course, Brockville. The boys & girls winners will go on to the OFSAA (Ontario Federation School Athletic Association) bonspiel in Thunder Bay at the end of March.

Convener of the EOSSAA event at the BCC was Dawn Russell (pictured above) a teacher from Gananoque. Great job Dawn. Also special thanks to Jonathan, Denise and Christianne for their great effort in hosting the event.

And if one event is not enough, the EOSSAA finals finish Friday around 5:00 PM and at 6:30 PM Friday the 1st draw of the 1000 Islands Mixed Weekend bonspiel gets underway. Yes! Busy, busy times at the BCC! And everyone is welcome for the Saturday evening party with Healy & Orr. Come join the fun!

BCC Impressive at Kingston Bonspiel

This past Saturday, February 12th, four Brockville Country Club curling teams participated in the Pat Lidd Senior Curling Bonspiel; at Cataraqui, Kingston. And our BCC teams were impressive; in fact they dominated!
Of the 24 teams participating our BCC teams placed 1st; 3rd; 4th and 5th. Wow! That's quite an acomplishment!
First overall was our BCC team skipped by Ron Edgeley, vice Warner Bischof, second Terry Fox and lead Jim Duhart.
Placing 3rd was Hank Hornay skip, Wayne Gallinger, John Wellington and Charlie Brady.
Fourth was Ray Thiboutot skip, Terry McDermid, Ian Nussey and Don Presley.
Fifth overall was our team of Al Kennedy skip, Larry Burrows, Grant Marshll and Colin Marriott.
Congrtaulations to all our players for representing themselves and the Brockville Country Club so well.

Busy Sunday Feb 13th at the BCC

Valentines Champagne Punch Brunch: A great turnout of some 110 BCC members and guests enjoyed a wonderful Valentines Brunch at the BCC Sunday February 13th from 11:00 AM to about 1:30 PM. Round of Beef; Rainbow Trout; Roasted Chicken; Ravioli; Sausage & Bacon; Vegetables; French Toast; Crepes; Omelette Station; Salad and Pastries along with beverages were some of the main features.
And of course the Chocolate Lovers Dessert Buffet was a huge draw to top off the scrumptious Brunch.

Golf Academy: While Brunch progressed in the Main Dining and Boardroom areas, members of the BCC Golf Academy were just below in the golf lounge hitting balls and taking a lesson from Derek. The Academy has been a great addition to the BCC giving our golfing members the opportunity to tune their game over the winter months.

Little Rocks Take to the Ice: Also Sunday morning, the Little Rocks program was in full swing on sheets 1 and 2 of our curling rink. Our budding stars! In addition to Jonathan, thanks goes to Cindy Dalgleish and Francis Lebrun for providing instruction.

Zone 2 PlayDowns: And if that was not enough, while all the above was going on, the BCC was hosting the Canada Gold Whisky Senior Mixed AND John Shay Insurance Mixed Zone 2 PlayDowns on sheets 3 to 6. Teams from Rideau, Prescott and Brockville participated with the top 2 from each divison advancing to the Regionals in Carlton Place. From there successful teams go to the Provincials the beginning of April. Congratulations to Matt Hone, Zone 2 OCA Representative and BCC member for orchestrating the event. Matt advises that next year, the BCC will actually be hosting the Provincials. Wow!

A busy Sunday Feb the 13th which demonstrates the many activities available to members; not just during the summer or winter, but all year round. Yes, membership in the BCC is a great value proposition!

Flagstick President Visits the BCC

This past Friday (Feb 4th), Jeff Bauder, President/Group Publisher of Flagstick Magazine, and related products, dropped into the BCC for a meeting with Derek MacDonald and Jack Kenny to talk golf and discuss BCC's promotional plans for the 2011 season. Serving Eastern Ontario and the Outaouais, Flagstick Magazine can be found in some 170 golf clubs throughout the area. The Magazine represents a targeted vehicle for the BCC to reach golfers in the greater Ottawa valley market. Flagstick is celebrating their 15th year of operation this season and will be moving to a higher-quality paper, making the magazine even more dazzling. St. Lawrence Academy Enjoys Curling Classes

For the past three weeks, some forty (40) plus students from the St. Lawrence Academy have been enjoying and taking instruction in curling at the BCC. The program has been very successful in exposing the young grade 3 to grade 8 students to the game of curling. Thanks to Jonathan Penny and Ara Papertzian for providing instruction. Jonathan, who set up the program, indicated the students were really easy to teach and "were like little sponges" adapting very quickly to the instruction.
With the very successful curling program over for this year, the BCC fully expects to see the St. Lawrence Academy back again next year with their well behaved, enthusiastic students, for more curling instruction and experience.

LaChance Wins Mid Winter Classic

The BCC's Mid Winter Classic Bonspiel was held this past Saturday January 22, 2011. Twelve (12) member teams participated in some great and closely matched curling. Two complete (8 end) games were played with a lunch break between games.
The overall winner was the Bernie LaChance team (38.5) with vice David VanBridge, 2nd Lorraine White and lead Julie Brais. Closely in second was Ann Chick's team (35.0) with Raul Cirne (vice), Gord Dougall (2nd) and Cynthia Maskell (lead). Third place team was Bob Chick (34.0) with

Corry Fox, Lorna VanBridger and Mo Gariepy.

All said they had a great day and liked the format with many hoping the same format will be used for the closing bonspiel. Congratulations to Harold Mooibroek for organizing at great spiel.

BCC Members Welcome Home Cody Fox

Cody Fox has long been associated with the Brockville Country Club. He played in many curling leagues starting as a junior and throughout high school. He represented the BCC, TISS, EOSSA in many tournaments. He also worked part time at the BCC as one of our ice technicians. And then he joined the Canadian Forces and went to Afganistan. Completing his tour of duty in Afganistan, Cody recently returned to Brockville. BCC member Sid VanderMeuler suggested BCC should welcome Cody back (Cody seen in picture with parents Terry and Corry) by holding a bonspiel in his honour. The Club agreed and Bob Jordan said he would organize.

So Friday evening, Jan 21st, a "Welcome Home Cody" fun bonspiel was held in a "Doubles Curling" format under World Confederation Rules. Eight (8) ends of curling, a buffet compliments of BCC, and a lot of camaraderie. We are all proud of Cody for his service in Afganistan and it's great to have him home back safe and sound.

LGSSAA School Kids Compete at BCC

An Exhibition Curling League has been formed for schools under the Leeds & Grenville Secondary School Athletic Association (LGSSAA) banner. Taking part in play Thursday afternoon at the BCC were teams from Gananoque (boys) and Ange-Gabriel, Brockville (girls, boys & mixed teams). Also participating is the St Mary's girls team.

Congratulations to Luc Guenette and Stephan LaPointe, teachers at Ange-Gabriel; Dawn Russell, teacher at Gananoque and Jonathan Penny, BCC ice technician for rejuvenating a curling league for school kids.

Teams that qualify through the LGSSAA league will have the opportunity to play in the Eastern Ontario Secondary School Athletic Association (EOSSAA) tournament scheduled for play at the Brockville Country Club, March 3 and 4, 2011. There will be 24 teams (8 boys, 8 girls & 8 mixed) participating and coming to the BCC from all over Eastern Ontario.

Be sure to drop into the BCC March 3 & 4 for some great junior curling. Who knows ... you might see the next Martin, Howard, Homan, Horgan team in the making!!

Winter Golf School Underway at BCC

The first ever BCC Winter Golf School is now in full swing. The brainchild of Derek MacDonald, BCC's pro, the academy will operate at various times, six days a week from January 10th to the end of March. Two hitting nets and a large putting green have been set up in the BCC's golf lounge. During core hours, participants can book a lesson each week with Derek, rated 3rd best CPGA Teaching Professional by Flagstick Magazine (Fall/2010). Outside core hours, members of the academy can book a practice session. Seen in the photo at right is Derek with his video camera and Al Duffield in the hitting cage. The photo below has Derek going over the swing images of Marsha Lindsey as she looks on. Derek states, "I truly believe that hitting balls indoors is one of the most effective ways to improve your golf swing, resulting in better ball contact. It is going to be an exciting time helping everyone improve their golf games over the winter months".

BCC Staff Christmas Party

The BCC staff Christmas party was recently held. Here is a report from Kelly:

"On Sunday January 2, 2011, the BCC staff got together for their annual Christmas party. In total 22 gathered for a potluck dinner that included some delicious lasagna, meatballs, salads, appetizers and yummy desserts. James Abrams (building superintendent - see below) hosted the classic Pictionary Game with the men taking on the women (guess who won!!), followed by a raffle prize table and the Chinese Gift Exchange. The entertainment included the Nintendo Wii console and Rockband with drums, guitar, keyboard and microphone. Everyone had a blast and can't wait for next year's celebrations. The staff would like to thank the Board and Members of the BCC for a wonderful evening."

And the Board and Members would also like to thank our staff and trust everyone will have a great 2011 year.

BCC Curling Clinic Held

The Brockville Country Club held a Curling Clinic between Christmas and New Years. The day event, including lunch, started with a "chalk talk", then ice time, ending with an actual game. The clinic, we are sure, held for both members and guests, will see all who attended "up their curling prowess" in 2011. A special thanks goes to Bob and Ann Chick who were the instructors for the day clinic. Bob, on the right, is seen monitoring the sweeping efforts as the rock heads towards the rings. Trust everyone is enjoying their curling as we head into 2011.

Grants to Brockville Country Club Announced

A goal of the BCC is to upgrade the "Granite Room" with air conditioning and acoustical treatment so that large banqets and shows can be hosted throughout the summer months in a proper environment. Today's announcement puts the BCC closer to that goal!!
The BCC is pleased to announce that a grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) in the amount of $75,000 and a second grant for $25,000 from the Government of Canada Eastern Ontario Development Program (EODP) has been awarded to the BCC.Making the announcement at a ceremony held at the BCC Tuesday morning (Dec 21st) were Leeds-Grenville MP Gord Brown and local MPP Steve Clark. Joining Gord and Steve in the photo were (from Left) Tom Russell; Executive Director of the 1000 Islands CDC; Valerie Deakin, OTF representative; Gord; Steve; Bob Larocque, BCC President and Jack Kenny, BCC Board Secretary. The local media were well represented at the announcement which should result in coverage in Wednesday's newspapers. With this announcement, the potential for a much improved Granite Room for functions this coming summer moves a step closer.

OCA Zones in Full Swing at BCC

Competition in a combined Ontario Curling Association Zone 1 and Zone 2 event are in action as we speak at the Brockville Country Club. Eleven teams, (8 men & 3 women teams) from Cornwall and the Ottawa Curling club make up the Zone 1 teams and six mens and 6 womens teams from Brockville and the Rideau Curling Club make up Zone 2 teams.

The Brockville team consists of BCC members; (picture from left), Skip Steve Lodge, second Rob Bushfield, third Ian Soutar and lead Nate Etherington. The BCC boys won their first game and are well into their second.

A total of 16 Zones are being played this weekend at various rinks. Two from each Zone for both mens and ladies will advance to four (4) Regionals; the eastern Ontario's regional being hosted at Cornwall early January. Two from each Regional will then advance to the Provincials to be held in Grimsby, Feb 7 & 8th. From there it is to the Tankard and Scotties.

The playoffs at the BCC this weekend will be exciting. Spectators are welcome at no charge to see who will advance, as teams try to make their way to the Dominion Tankard (Mens) and Scotties Tournament of Hearts (Women). Come watch some great curling; it will be exciting!

BCC Member "Bellringers"

For over 10 years, BCC members have come together to volunteer their time and "man" The Salvation Army's Christmas kettle outside the uptown LCBO. Ross Henniger has been the main organizer scheduling some 40 BCC members over a 5 week period (Nov 19th to Dec 24). The Ontario Curling Association Zones 1 & 2 at BCC This Weekend

This weekend, December 11 & 12, 2010, the BCC will be hosting some exciting curling. It is the Ontario Curling Association's Zone 1 and 2 men's and women's competition. This will be the first step for many teams as they try to make the long journey to the BRIER and SCOTTIES.

The BCC member team of Steve Lodge, Rob Bushfield, Ian Soutar & Nate Etherington will compete. Other familiar local names include Laura Payne, Jeff & Christine McCrady. Shorty Champ Rachel Homan will also be present. Competition kicks off at 9:30 AM Saturday. Further Saturday games start at 1:00 PM, 5 PM and 8:30 PM. Sunday games start at 12 noon, 4 PM and 8 pm. Spectators are welcome and encouraged. There is no charge for spectators. Drop in to the BCC over this weekend to see some great curling. You will be glad you did!!

BCC Ladies Christmas Dinner

Tuesday evening, November 30th, was Ladies Night at the BCC as they got together for the annual Ladies Christmas Dinner. Organized by Joan Byers, some 65 of our BCC ladies were treated to a scrumptious meal of squash bisque, roasted pork loin or rainbow trout and a sticky toffee pudding. The ladies had fun socializing before and after dinner and Joan thanked the ladies present for pretty well filling her SUV with groceries and money for the food bank. It is much appreciated, especially at this time of year. From the sound level emanating from the dining room, we are sure the ladies had a great evening.

Members Congregate for Annual General Meeting (AGM)

The 35th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Brockville Country Club was held in the main dining area this past Monday evening, November 29th, with some 85 members in attendance.
President Bob Larocque reviewed the Club's financial health and ongoing projects. The Club's section mamagers were introduced and Bob thanked them for a job well done. New Board members Deborah Souder, Grant Mackie, Paul Darby and Ben TeKamp were welcomed to the Board. They join returning members Bob Larocque, Ray Bushfield, Jack Kenny and Doug Lousely; members in their second year Joan Byers, Warner Bischof and ex-officio commttee chairs & Board members Dale Watts, Jack Alexander and Harold Mooibroek. Members voted and approved the new Board slate as presented. Following a question period and wrap-up, all members were able to socialize while enjoying a wine & cheese spread sponsored by the Club.

1st Annual MOVEMBER at the BCC

Around the world, men have been growing moustaches throughout November in a month-long charity event that raises funds and awareness for men's health issues. These generous fellows, known as "Mo Bros", groom, trim and wax their way into the annals of fine moustachery. At the end of the month, participants and their female supporters (known as "Mo Sistas") celebrate their gallantry by throwing their own "Movember" party. In the BCC's case, these fine Mo Bros above, organized a "Mo Spiel" at the BCC held this past Saturday evening. If you had been there, you could have tried your hand at a "Short Game", or tried drawing to the button from corner-to-corner. BCC's Movember MoSpiel was a fun event and the 1st Annual. Next year we are sure it will be bigger and better. Monies raised go to Prostate Cancer Canada.

New Curling Members Welcomed

Friday evening mixed curling has welcomed some 35 new curlers to the Brockville Country Club. To show our appreciated the BCC Membership Committee hosted Friday night with some "sampler" bubblies (thanks Beaus) and snacks (thanks BCC). Rodger Rhodes (at podium) welcomed the new curlers and covered a few of the curling subtleties. Jack Kenny brought greetings from the Board. The two draws had a fun evening and we trust all our new curlers are having a great time. We also trust our existing members are working with the new curlers to ensure they are being well integrated. Many of the new curlers are pay-as-play members, and we would love to see them all migrate to full-time BCC curling members.

BCC Rinks Shine at "Limestone"

Two of our BCC rinks travelled to Kingston this past weekend to compete in the Limestone Invitational Bonspiel for Seniors at the Royal Kingston Curling Club. Both our rinks won their games! Wow! When tallying up the scores our rink of Al Kennedy, Bill Kyle, Warner Bischof and Grant Marshall (shown in picture) placed 2nd overall. Right on their heels, placing 3rd overall was our BCC rink of Ron Edgeley, Charlie Brady, Steve Gill and Don Presley. Congratulation guys for a job well done! This weekend is the "Mens Senior Invitational Bonspiel" at the BCC where eight (8) of our rinks will take on other teams from Eastern Ontario. Good luck to all our BCC rinks as they represent our club and host our neighbours.

Four of our BCC members; Brian, Steve, Shawn and Bill were seen heading out for a round of golf this past Saturday morning, October 30th. Although a little damp, the temperature has remained quite reasonable. (Brian, you need to add a new umbrella to your Christmas list!). The course will remain open after October 31st, but with temporary greens. Members are welcome to play, as weather permits, but are asked to please stay off the greens as Lawrence has started preparing the greens for winter. Carts will not be available after Sunday; so walking only! Curling may have started, but the hardy can still golf at the BCC during November!!

BCC Seniors Host Cornwall Seniors

The Cornwall Curling Club and the Brockville Country Club played back-to-back curling spiels; the first being played last Friday, Oct 22 in Cornwall and the rematch at the BCC this Friday Oct. 29th. The "Friendly" was organized at our end by Pat Alair with six (6) rinks from Cornwall and six (6) rinks from the BCC for a total of 48 participants. Rumour has it that Cornwall took most of the marbles!Following the morning play, all participants were treated to a fine lunch in the curling lounge.Throughout the curling season our seniors will participate in other "friendlies" at such clubs as Gananoque, Prescott and Smith Falls. Good luck to all our BCC members as you travel and represent the BCC in the various "friendlies".

Ron Healy Appreciation Day Well Attended

Sunday, October 17, 2010 was Ron Healy Appreciation Day recognizing his many years of service at BCC as he now moves to other challenges. The day started with a scramble at 12:30 PM on a beautiful sunny day. During the afternoon, Ron played with many member groups by flipping from group to group.Following golf, golfers were joined by many other members and guests for a great meal presented by Denise and her staff. Well over 125 were present. Although a fun day, there were a few prizes presented. The picture above shows Ron congratulating the overall scramble winners Ken LeBlanc, Bob Frost (at rear), Doug Lovat and Paul Sloan.Following dinner and prizes, Kelly Winsor, BCC's accountant told of his getting golf instruction from Ron. Ardis Lindsay then provided a tribute to Ron's many years at the BCC. Bob Larocque, our Club President chaired the evening which culminated with Bob presenting Ron with an Honorary Lifetime BCC Membership, that being followed by a standing ovation. Monday, Ron was off to the Chateau Cartier Resort in Gatineau where he was installed as the CPGA Ottawa Zone President at their trade show, dinner and awards night. (Ron is shown in the picture being presented the Shield from past President Dale Pederson). Congratulations Ron for your many years at the BCC and all the best in your new challenges. And you can bet members will be "looking for a game" next season.

Over the summer months, more than 120 BCC men and women members challenged each other in the various "ladders" of match play categories. And now the winners have been crowned!!

Dale Watts Wins NIKE Draw

During Tuesday, August 31st, when NIKE representative Michael Doyon was at the BCC showcasing his line of NIKE apparel, all members who filled out a survey-form had a chance to win a NIKE prize. Well we have a winner! None other than our Club Captain, Dale Watts (on right), shown being presented a "top-of-the-line" NIKE "Method" putter by our Derek MacDonald. Congratulations Dale!
The BCC is moving forward and will have a full line of NIKE apparel on display for our 2011 golf season. The goal is also to "freshen up" our whole Pro Shop, so stay tuned for details as enhancements are worked on.

MPP Steve Clark Speaks at Chamber Event

MPP Steve Clark was guest speaker at The Brockville and District Chamber of Commerce breakfast held at the Brockville Country Club Thursday morning. About 100 chamber members heard Steve make a plea for chamber support for a business plan he, Senator Bob Runciman and MP Gord Brown are trying to have commissioned to bring a secure female treatment unit to the Brockville Mental Health Unit. Steve, trying to stay to provincial issues related a lighter moment when speaking to students at Toniata Public school; a "cute little girl" asked "what's your position on the MDC?". Steve also had fun relating to when he ran for mayor with about 14 signs, compared to the current "most talked-about election in the City's history" with an "unprecendented number of candidates" ... and signs!

The setting at the BCC was ideal with a great breakfast served to the chamber members and guests. The BCC would be pleased to look after your needs for such meetings, whether large or small.

Twilight Ladies Celebrate Year

Some 30 ladies from the Ladies Twilight League celebrated their year at a wonderful dinner at the Brockville Country Club last week. The league is made up of BCC members and "promotional" ladies and is played each Wednesday evening in various fun formats. During the dinner, the convenor baton was passed from Jennifer Baker to the duo of Susan Hildebrand and Roberta Riddell. Congratulations ladies on a well run program and we look forward to a great turnout for your 2011 golf season.

Sarah Throop Wins "Draw to the Button"

Thursday evening, the fourth of the BCC curling clinics was held with another good turnout. As the evening wound down, the much anticipated "Draw to the Button" contest was held for all new signed-up members present. And the winner? Well, 14 year old Sarah Throop made a beautiful draw to the button to win over some 20 others of all ages and experience. Shown in the photo with Sarah is BCC's Don Neilsen (at back) and Harold Mooribroek who measured Sarah's draw at 10.5 inches from the center of the button. Congratulations Sarah, and we are sure you will enjoy your curling at the BCC this year

The curling clinics held were well attended with some 45 participants Tuesday and Thursday of this week. Many new members have signed up and we trust our regular curlers will welcome them into the club. Curling leagues are getting organized but there is still ample room for new members.

At just $220.50 for first year curlers (golf members to curl first year only $169), it is a great deal. Try curling this year and beat the winter blahs.

St. Lawrence College Golf Team Practice at BCC

Team members just started their college year after Labour Day and have been scrambling to get their golf in shape for upcoming tournaments. Fun Day at BCC Men's Closing Event

Some 88 of the BCC's best tackled the Men's Closing Golf Event Saturday, Sept 25th. The 12:30 PM shotgun used a Rider Cup style format to challenge the two-man teams. The first 6 holes were played as a Best Ball; the next 6 as a Scramble and the last 6 as Alternate Shot.

Low Gross winnners were Chris Lafreniere and Dale Watts. Low Net winners (being presented their prize by Dale Watts - center) were Ted Clayton and Matt Smith. 2nd Gross: Klyde Brayton and Shane Easter. 2nd Net: Dale Robertson and Bob Robertson. 3rd Gross Daryl Flynn and Chris Glashan. 3rd Net: Derek Mitchell and Steve Emery. Prizes back to 10th place were awarded for both Gross and Net categories.
Closest to the pin on # 3 was Terry Davis. On # 9, an unusual tie occured between Stu MacDonald and Mark Peacock. Larry Bolton was closest on # 15 and Steve Michel closest on # 17.
Following golf and a bar break, participants were treated to a great beef buffet with all the trimmings.
Thanks to Dale, Ron and Derek for putting together a fun men's 2010 closing. But remember, there is still a lot of golf to be played this year! So keep on swinging!!

Company Team-Builds at the BCC

Proctor & Gamble knows how to get members of their team working together. They curl!! Following meetings and dinner at the BCC for members of P&G from the Brockville facility, other parts of Canada and the USA, a curling session was held. Some had been exposed to the sport at the Vancouver Olympics, and were eager to try it out. BCC's Tammy Sokolowski, Monique Penney and Jonathan Penney (seen ready to demonstrate sweeping) provided instruction. Two short games were then played by the P&G team.

Homan and Menard Rinks Win Shorty

The 14th running of the AMJ Campbell Shorty Jenkins Curling Classic made history this past weekend. For the first time ever, a defending winner was crowned. The Ottawa ladies Homan rink accommplished the feat by becoming back-to-back winners, defending against the Farnell rink in the semifinals and the Horgan rink in the finals.
In the men's division, Quebec's Jean-Michel Menard's rink survived a tight battle against Sault St. Marie's Brad Jacobs' rink to take the Shorty crown. Menard's rink had to win over the Howard rink in the quarter finals, the Stoughton rink in the semifinals and then the Jacobs rink .. quite an achievement.
Congratulations to Gord McCrady Jr., Jonathan Penney and their host of BCC volunteers for another great Shorty Jenkins Curling Classic.

Shorty Jenkins Curling Classic Underway!

The AMJ Campbell Shorty Jenkins Curling Classic got underway today with draws at 4:00, 6:30 and 9:30 PM. Some of the best teams in the world are competing, coming from Newfoundland, Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba, Wisconsin, Minnesota; and even as far away as Russia. Shown are the ladies Belise and Harrison rinks on sheet one. The round robin continues Friday, and Saturday with the championship rounds scheduled for Sunday. Spectators are most welcome for the slight charge of $10 per day, or $25 for a four day pack. Congratulations to Gord McCrady Jr., Jonathan Penney, the whole organizing committee and the host of BCC volunteers for again bringing the Shorty Jenkins Curling Classic to Brockville and the BCC. BCC Curling Ice Going In!!

The Curling Season is just around the corner! Jonathan Penney along with BCC member volunteers are shown painting the curling floor white in preparation for the circles, lines and ice.

First Event is the AMJ Campbell Shorty Jenkins Curling Classic September 16 - 19th. Members and guests are welcome to come watch some of the best curlers in the world compete at the BCC for just $10.00 per day or $25 for a four day pack.

Second activity and right after the "Shorty", the BCC curling section will be holding FREE Curling Clinics for members and the public. They run evenings of Sept 21, 23, 28 & 30th. FREE Instruction will be provided by our instructors and they will work with you to get you started into appropriate leagues. On the 30th there will be a "Draw to the Button" contest for all new curling members. The prize will be a one year FREE membership.

Golfers, did you know that as a 1st year curler, you can curl for the full season for just $169.25 plus tax. That's only $14.10 a MONTH, over 12 months and no additional stipend. What a deal ... so golfers, try curling this year!!

A Gold Medalist in our Midst

Did you know that one of our BCC members won GOLD at the Canada Senior 55+ Games? Well it is a fact! Ted Cullen accomplished the feat by winning gold in golf in the 65 to 74 age category. Ted was up against some 20 others while playing the Smugglers Glen. Shooting an 86 the first day, Ted entered the second day 2 strokes down. Playing with golfers from Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Chatham, Ontario, Ted shot a 77 for a two game total of 163 ... 6 shots better than second and good for gold. Some 74 golfers from right across Canada participated. Congratulations Ted in representing yourself, the BCC and Brockville so well.

BCC Senior Mens Team Play Intersectionals

On Tuesday, September 7th our BCC Senior Mens OVGA Intersectional Team travelled to the Glengarry Golf Course just outside of Alexandria to play their intersectional match. Competition came from Glengarry (the host), Copperdale (just back of Kanata) and Greensmere (just west of Stittsville). Greensmere won the day and our BCC boys finished 3rd just a couple of points behind Glengarry. This means the BCC remains at the "G" category (7th place out of 16 categories) for 2011 with Glengarry remaining the host. Greensmere moves up a category and Copperdale down one. Our team playing at Glengarry included: Ray Lumsden, Jonathan O'Reilly, Tom Moran, Bob Larocque, Bob Frost, Ted Cullen, Doug Lovat and Bill Logan. Congratulations guys for well representing the Brockville Country Club.

Team Howard; Gueshue; Stoughton; Matchett; Hemmings; Ferland; Fenson; George; McCarville; Belisle; Harrison; Homan are just some of the many teams entered.Spectators are most welcome. BCC Hosts United Way Tournament

The Brockville Country Club was host, Saturday September 4th to the United Way Golf Tournament. The tournament is a fund raiser for United Way, and as the smiling faces of the overall winners can attest, it was a fun day. The golf was a little blustery from the effects of hurricane "Earl", but that didn't effect teams completing play on time. Following golf, a tasty banquet was held in the BCC's upper dining room. And tradition was upheld as a great prize table was made available by Black & Decker with all participants taking home a prize. The United Way is a great cause and the BCC is pleased to have hosted their golf tournament and look forward to next year.

2010 Friends of Palliative Care Tournament Huge

The 17th annual Friends of Palliative Care Golf Tournament and Banquet was held at the BCC Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2010. It was a super success. Two full draws were orchestrated; the first at 7:30 AM and the second at 12:30 PM for a total of 288 participants. And the organizing committee, volunteers and BCC staff handled it like clock work.

The day was hot, but with lots of fluid everyone enjoyed the BCC course and completed their round in good time. Following golf play and a social hour, all participants were treated to a great banquet meal prepared and served by BCC staff.

But the day was about Palliative Care. The yearly tournament is a major fund raiser to maintain the Palliative Care services for Brockville and the surrounding area. Following a great meal, speaches, draws and the silent auction, co-chairs Dave Publow and Jim Cooper presented Dave Bryer, representing the Brockville and District Hospital Foundation, with a check for $135,000. WOW!

As the Organizing Committee stated in their Tournament Program, "Our friends, our volunteers and the Brockville Country Club did something wonderful today and we Thank You!"

It was a great day, and we look forward to a successful 2011 Friends of Palliative Care Tournament.

NIKE Day at the BCC

NIKE showcased their complete line of 2011 apparel at the BCC Tuesday, August 31st. BCC members had the opportunity to puruse the entire line and indicate their 5 top preferences. NIKE rep, Michael Doyon (left) and BCC's Derek MacDonald completed evaluation forms from members which will be used as input when adding to the BCC's Pro Shop inventory in the spring. Thanks for your suggestions BCC Members! And thanks NIKE.
